The Key to a Great Client and Hairstylist Relationship

Updated: Feb 4, 2023

I've been a hairstylist for over 25 years. While the job has changed significantly over that time, there are some things that have remained consistent. One of those things is how we work with clients. We're not just cutting hair; we're building relationships with people who trust us enough to let us into their lives (and on their heads).

Trust

Trust is essential to a healthy client-stylist relationship. In order to trust your stylist, you must be able to put your faith in the decisions she makes when styling your hair.

If at any point during the appointment you feel uncomfortable or find yourself questioning a choice she made, do not hesitate to speak up! Your stylist should respect this honesty, as it shows that you value her professionalism and appreciate her opinion on what looks best for you. If discussing the issue does not help clear up any confusion about why she did something or if she feels like this was a bad idea, then consider leaving at once and finding another stylist who can meet all of those needs for both of you.

Communicate

Communication is key in any relationship, but it's especially important when you're working with a hairstylist. Your hairstylist should understand what you want from your hair and how it will affect the overall look of your face and body.

Before you go to a salon for the first time, talk about what kind of style would work best for your face shape and hair type. For example: Is this person's face round? What kind of haircut would complement that? You can also find inspiration online by searching "haircut for round faces" or similar phrases on Google Images or Pinterest.

Once you've decided on a style, ask if there's anything else they'd like to know about why those features might be relevant to this experience together—it could help them give better feedback later on in the session!

On top of knowing what kind of cut they want, clients should also try communicating with their stylists throughout their sessions as necessary. Clients should be mindful not only in asking questions during consultations but throughout their appointments as well--both parties need open dialogue so that everyone feels comfortable and involved throughout each step along the way."

  • Hair color is a big deal. It can completely change your look, and you don't want to trust it to just anyone.

  • Trust your stylist, but be sure to ask questions. Always feel free to ask your stylist about their background, what they're doing with your hair, and how long it will take before you see results. You are allowed (and encouraged) to do research on the products they recommend or use on you.

Work with your stylist to achieve the best results possible

To get the most out of your time with your stylist, it's important to remember that they're experts in their field. They understand what works best for hair and can help you decide which products will do the job properly. As a client, you should be open to suggestions and feedback from your stylist—it's better to learn from them than from someone else who isn't as familiar with your hair type or goals!

I hope this blog post helped you learn more about the client and hairstylist relationship. It’s important to remember that both parties are there for each other, and together they can have an amazing experience!
